HDR Video from D7000?

November 21st, 2010 by Rick

The possibilities had me curious.  I didn’t see a way to get true, multiple exposures without a setup like this (which is way beyond my means).  But, since Photomatix has began to make interesting “HDR” images from single images, I wanted to try.  Two caveats:

- Purists:  I know this is not actually HDR; leave a comment if you must though.

- This particular example was processed using a variant of the Photomatix Black & White preset, just because I thought it created an interesting view.  I did experiment with overly saturated extremes that have become popular – it works!

I’ll leave you with this for the moment!  Enjoy…

Nikon D7000 Example – 720p 24 fps

November 20th, 2010 by Rick

After having the new Nikon D7000 for a week now, I’m getting more and more familiar with its video capabilities.  This 720p video was shot with an 18-200 3.5 lens, edited in Adobe Premiere CS4 and exported using Premiere’s “Adobe TV 720p” preset.  I’m interested to see if this will play on an iPhone / iPad, as the other examples I’ve posted do not work.  They should, since JWPlayer is now HTML5 compatible (and that’s what I’m using to bring these into WordPress).

So far, I’m completely impressed with this camera’s capabilities.  Although I haven’t posted any of the photographs I’ve shot with it, trust me – they’re gorgeous!  Some knock the lack of 50 and 60 fps frame rates and the 1080i mode of the D7000, but that’s not a big deal for me.  My work is destined for the web, and for my purpose it works wonderfully.  And, of course, I’ve got one camera to work in both the photo and video worlds.

[Edit]:  After originally posting this, I found that the video is still not visible on an iPhone / iPad.  More troubleshooting (learning) to get HTML5 figured out.

Originally shot at the maximum size & quality (but using auto exposure settings), this sample was downsized in post to 720p.

Another D7000 Test

This short clip was shot handheld using auto settings at night with the D7000.

Testing D7000 Footage and HTML 5

November 16th, 2010 by Rick

This is primarily a test of using HTML 5 in WordPress, but at the same time it uses some of the first footage I shot with a Nikon D7000.

This segment was shot in 720p at 30fps (blow it up to full screen!) using auto controls.  More follow!
